Coevolved Creation:
A Story of Two Artists
This film displays the collaboration and conflict of an artist couple at Colorado College. It starts with their individual artistic stories and struggles. Jeremiah begins saying, “I hated art in middle school” and tells his story of not liking art and after that Brenda then says. “Growing up, art wasn’t valid.” The film shows both their innate similarities as artists, but also their extreme differences both artistically and personally. Their relationship subtly reveals how individual personalities reflect artistic styles and how that factors into a marriage and relationship. This material is paralleled with visuals of their artistic process from beginning to end. By the end, theri art is done but they understand that subconsciously they do collaborate even if it’s not completely obvious to themselves.
Forgotten:
African American Newspapers of Colorado Springs
Beyond serving as conduit for information, community journalism seeks to connect people, and the African American newspapers of Colorado Springs are no exception. During the final decades of the 19th century and well into the first half of the 20th century, these publications provided a space for unheard voices and became a trusted source of advice and opinions for their readers, attempting to advance the community as much as inform it. They can be viewed as a product of how a community has bonded through oppression and discrimination, and their pages provide insight into race relations in Colorado Springs as well as other stories and issues that were illuminating of the place and time of the respective publications. Our story will trace the histories of these newspapers and speak to their relationship with present-day publications, beginning with the cultural conditions that preceded them and ending with a look at how their legacies can inform understandings of race and community in Colorado Springs in 2019.
The End of the World:
A comparative analysis of Hollywood end of the world films and Von Trier’s Melancholia
Hollywood End of the World films have been glorified and centered around men. Men make the decisions and are usually the characters in the ‘know’. The men possess the power in these situations. The women are usually in the background but when women are in the forefront are ‘power figures’ trying to dominate the scene. In these films, these characters are attached to self preservation and denial, rather than acceptance. Although these films expose the failures of society, they fail to have the same feminine metaphysical grounding that von Trier exhibits in Melancholia.
